The Burgess Shale - A UNESCO World Heritage Site


Located in Yoho National Park, just over a 1-hour drive east of Heather Mountain Lodge. The Burgess Shale is a fossil bed of great size and significance. Discovered in 1909 by Charles D. There are hikes in the general area of the
Burgess Shale, but you cannot enter the
site unless you are part of a tour with a

To hike to the famous Burgess Shale site (Walcott Quarry) takes a full day (20 km round-trip) and crosses incredible but rugged mountain terrain, make sure you are prepared! Mount Stephen Fossil Beds is a half-day hike, (6 km round-trip) described as short but steep.
